User Testing on a Budget
You don’t need a big budget to get valuable user feedback. Here’s how to run effective tests with limited resources.
Remote Testing Works
Unmoderated remote testing is affordable and scalable:
- UserTesting.com - $49 per session
- Maze - Free tier available
- Optimal Workshop - Great for surveys
Five-Second Tests
The simplest test you can run:
Show users your app for 5 seconds
Ask:
1. What did you notice first?
2. What do you think this app does?
3. Would you click anywhere?
Compile responses to identify:
- Confusion points
- Key value propositions
- Intuitive interaction patterns
Tree Testing for Navigation
Before building, test your information architecture:
# Example tree test task
Task: "Where would you go to find your account settings?"
Users should find it in:
Settings → Account → Profile
Pass rate > 70% means good navigation
hallway testing
The cheapest test of all - grab someone in the hallway:
- Show them your prototype
- Ask them to do one task
- Watch their face, not just their words
“If you’re embarrassed to show it to users, it’s not ready.”
What to Watch For
During testing, note:
- Hesitation moments
- Verbal confusion (“I would click… um…”)
- Attempts to click non-interactive elements
- Exclaimed frustration or delight
Don’t ask “Did you find that confusing?” - users often won’t admit it.
Minimum Viable Testing
You can validate an idea with just:
- 3-5 users (most problems surface by the 5th user)
- 15-20 minutes per session
- Any prototype, even paper sketches
Start small, test often, iterate quickly.
